Physiological Ecology and Evolution of Endotherms

I am currently employed as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Zoology and Entomology, Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa. My research focuses on ecological and evolutionary determinants of thermal physiological and behavioural responses in endotherms.

Vulnerability of Fynbos Endemic birds to climate change

We are currently gathering physiological and behavioural data from Fynbos endemic birds to serve as a guideline in assessing their vulnerability to Global Warming. This image shows a Cape Rock-jumper in a metabolic chamber while heat-dissipation efforts are assessed in a field laboratory. Collaborators: Ms. Robyn Milne (MSc student, UCT), Dr. Alan Lee (SANBI), Dr. Susie Cunningham (UCT), Prof. Peter Ryan (UCT).

Cape Rock-jumper Chaetops frenatus

Cape Rock-jumper <i> Chaetops frenatus<i></i></i>

Belongs to the enigmatic bird family, Chaetopidae, endemic to Africa. Their closest relative is the weird Malaysian Rail-babbler. This species is restricted to the cool Cape Fold Mountains of South Africa.
